Are you celebrating Independents Day?

No, the title to this blog post isn’t a typo. It’s a new way of viewing your local shops. Often we talk about “shopping local” or buying from “small business” but your town’s merchants aren’t all small and some franchise owners are every bit a part of the local scene as a traditional mom and pop shop, so many chambers and business associations are embracing supporting “independents.”

This term is common when it comes to media. We often refer to record labels, production houses and bookstores as indies. But now there’s a fun way to give your merchants an added boost with the upcoming holiday.

Celebrate Independents Day

The birth of our nation — Independence Day — is a great time to help your merchants shine with their own “Independents Day.” Tie in the patriotic theme through blog and social media posts that honor the entrepreneurial spirit of your indies.

The U.S. is often referred to as a salad bowl or a melting pot, distinct flavors adding interest to our culture. Your community stores are the same. Without their local flavor, your town’s shopping experience and economy would be bland.

Independence Day is often a time when the town comes together for parades, fireworks displays, picnics and more. It’s an ideal opportunity to draw some attention to your merchants as well. You can design a special social media template for this time of year. Tie-in what makes a merchant a valuable part of your community or ask a few of them what they love about your town and feature that on your Facebook page. Ask your audience to add their favorites as well. Summer fun is also family time so make sure you include suggestions for family friendly opportunities with your independents.

Get out the fireworks and add some sizzle and showcase the independent businesses that make your community great.
