Schools are about to be in session and for some students that means leaving home for the first time. If you know of someone going off to school there’s a very good chance, that young adult will be missing his/her hometown before too long.
Give the Gift of Local
Shop local programs often use the phrase “Give the Gift of Local” but never is that more fitting that in sending that special student something from home. Your student probably won’t care that the gift you gave supported a local shop owner, and your student probably isn’t giving much thought to the local economy, but what your student is doing is thinking about home and how much s/he loves that particular item or food you sent.
Here are some local gift ideas for students who are out of town:
1. Coffee from the local coffee shop. (Make sure s/he has a coffee maker before sending this one.)
2. His or her favorite local treat. Give your student the taste of home.
3. A chamber gift certificate. These online gift certificates mean your student can order what he or she misses most of home from the participating vendors.
4. A watercolor poster of a beautiful spot in the community.
5. A plant from a local florist that reminds your student of home.
6. Tempt your student to make a trip home for a special beauty indulgence.
7. An article of clothing reminiscent of his/her hometown such as a city t-shirt or ball cap.
8. A book from an indy bookstore written by someone from your area, or about your area.
9. A funny photo book of one of your student’s favorite childhood toys in front of his/her favorite area attractions.
10. A favorite condiment from a local restaurant, such as local hot sauce or a spice set that will remind him/her of home every time it’s added to a meal.
Your student is starting off on an exciting adventure. Remind him/her of what makes your hometown special. You can’t do this at a box store. The flavor of home is in your local merchants.
