small business week

This Sunday kicks off National Small Business Week, an event of the US Small Business Administration. It’s held in order to bring attention and revenue to small businesses that make up the backbone of our communities through job creation and profitability. But it also encourages entrepreneurialism with its hashtag #DreamSmallBiz.

If you’d like to celebrate it in your community, here are some suggestions:

  • Tell the story of a small business in your community. Make it about more than what they sell but how they help and what went into the culture they’ve created.
  • Encourage people to post about their favorite small business on your Facebook page. Do a special highlight post on the business that gets the most likes or give them chamber bucks.
  • Reminisce about businesses in your community through a blog post or social media posts.
  • Create a scavenger hunt for things found at small businesses.
  • Host a virtual “Best of <Your Town>” through social media. Ask people to nominate and vote. Have some fun with the categories.
  • Take selfies at small businesses around town and post them to Facebook. Ask people to guess where you are.
  • Ask small business owners what advice they’d give people who want to own a business. Compile them in a blog post or make visual posts out of the quotes and post them to social media.
  • Show up at a small business with a special something and thank them for helping making your town great.
  • Ask youth sports teams that are sponsored by small businesses to do something special for their sponsors. It doesn’t have to cost anything. A video greeting and thank you that the business can use on their website is ideal.
  • Ask your employees what their favorite small businesses are and post them on your website or social media like Blockbuster used to feature employee picks.
  • Write a favorable review for a business you’ve used.
