How do you encourage shop local exploration?

One of the keys to a successful shop local campaign is encouraging shoppers to branch out and try something new. Once they visit, they’re more likely to return if the store makes an impression. While the Internet is a valuable property for most businesses, shop local still relies mainly on in-person visits.

But how do you encourage them?

Give Shoppers a Reason to be Adventurous

A contest or treasure map will often entice shoppers (or diners) to try something new. Check out this fun idea from the Cordele-Crisp Chamber. They have created a new shop local campaign entitled “Wally Wednesday” around their Watermelon mascot, Wally. Each week a member business is chosen, featured on social media, and Wally is hidden there in their store/business. The first customer to find Wally (in the store) wins a gift card from that store.

Educate Them

While many people understand the importance of keeping money in the local community they don’t understand the numbers behind it. Providing them with some statistics and education on the shop local movement is a great way to encourage exploration.

While you’re doing that, you’ll also want to strike down any misconceptions about shopping local, such as local stores are more expensive than box stores. This is not always the case and some businesses will price match. It’s also a lot easier to return items to a local store than deal with mailing the items back to wherever you purchased them from on the Internet.

The more shoppers you educate, the more people will embrace the benefits of shopping local.

Create Maps

Sometimes people don’t shop local because they simply don’t think of it. For instance, when you need something for a DIY project you often think of large box stores. Playing up your local hardware store, featuring them, and displaying them prominently on a paper or interactive online map may help people in your community, and those visiting it, to patronize a local store instead.
